The Childrens Orthopaedic Center and its Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric orthopaedic program in the western United States and one of the top five in the nation. The Center’s inpatient and outpatient services address the full spectrum of conditions affecting bones, muscles and joints, including traumatic injuries and complex congenital and developmental abnormalities, tailoring services for each patient and family. Each year, the Center receives nearly 18,000 visits from children and performs close to 1,600 surgical procedures, making it one of the busiest areas at Childrens Hospital. Many of these cases involve traumatic injuries and severe musculoskeletal problems – especially scoliosis and other pediatric spine disorders – that can have devastating consequences for children throughout their lives.
Our Programs
The Childrens Orthopaedic Center is one of the nation’s most comprehensive programs dedicated to pediatric musculoskeletal care, education and research:
- The Scoliosis and Spine Disorders Program at the Childrens Orthopaedic Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is one of the largest in the country – and the only one of its kind in Los Angeles County devoted exclusively to the pediatric population.
- The Congenital Spine and Chest Wall Deformity Program at the Childrens Orthopaedic Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is one of few sites in the country – and the only pediatric facility in California – to offer a new treatment using surgically implanted titanium ribs to expand the chest over time and allow the chest and lungs to grow, while straightening the spine.
- The Motion Analysis Laboratory at the Childrens Orthopaedic Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is designed to provide state-of-the-art analysis of muscle activity and joint movements in children who have difficulty walking, such as those with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and congenital leg conditions.
Our Staff
Our faculty is comprised of nationally and internationally recognized pediatric orthopaedists, all fellowship-trained and Board-certified members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. They are joined by pediatric nurses, dedicated operating room staff, pediatric physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitation specialists, prosthetists, and biomechanical engineers.
Our Facilities
Our state-of-the-art facilities include the John C. Wilson, Jr. Motion Analysis Laboratory, where physicians evaluate orthopaedic conditions and plan surgical strategies with the aid of 3-D computer technology. Clinical care is provided by the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in its outpatient clinic, satellite clinics, and the newly constructed Burtie Green Bettingen Surgery Center, in addition to the Motion Analysis Laboratory.
Research Activities
The Childrens Orthopaedic Center is constantly engaged in research designed to improve care for children with orthopaedic difficulties. Our faculty are conducting research that is changing the way pediatric orthopaedics is practiced around the world.
