Contact Steve Rutledge

Steven M. Rutledge was named director of communications at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles on March 3, 2002, following more than seven years in communications at the hospital, including service as manager of external communications (1999-2002) and manager of media relations (1995-1999).

Mr. Rutledge is responsible for supporting all aspects of the Integrated Marketing Communications program at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, as well as for the administrative management of the Office of Communications, with oversight for internal and external communications, creative services, still photography and filming, videotape and film production.  He is responsible for news conferences and interacts with news organizations as the hospital's primary spokesperson.

Mr. Rutledge is a member of several committees at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, including the JCAHO Steering Committee and the Emergency Preparedness Committee, as well as the design and evaluation team responsible for creating the hospital's Management & Leadership Development Training Program.

Prior to his initial appointment at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Mr. Rutledge was manager of public relations at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA (1994-1995), where he was responsible for public relations, media relations and marketing.

Mr. Rutledge was the manager of editorial services for the World Cup 1994 Organizing Committee (1993-1994), where he wrote and edited a monthly newspaper, a capabilities brochure, technical pamphlets, the Final Draw program and nine venue guides, as well as by-lined articles for World Cup CEO Alan Rothenberg.  He also has served as an account supervisor for PacRim Communications (1991-1992), formulating and implementing marketing strategies for a variety of sports clients, including Yonex, the Los Angeles Sports Council, the Santa Anita Racetrack and an Australian challenger for the 1992 America's Cup yacht race.

His background in communications and public relations includes service as the director of communications and media relations for the Amateur Athletic Foundation (AAF) of Los Angeles (1987-1991), a non-profit organization charged with managing the $93 million surplus from the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.  Among his duties was speechwriting for Anita L. DeFrantz, president of the AAF, and a United States representative to the International Olympic Committee.

Mr. Rutledge served as a sports information director for San Jose State University (1978-1981), where he was responsible for event management and media oversight for 12 women's sports, hosted or staffed numerous regional and national NCAA Division I championships and won national awards for his brochures; and sports information director for California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (1981-1986), where he was responsible for event management and media oversight for 18 men's and women's sports, hosted or staffed a variety of regional and national NCAA Division II championships and won national awards for his brochures.

Mr. Rutledge served as the venue press chief for wrestling (at the Anaheim Convention Center) during the 1984 Olympic Games, managing a staff of 20 public relations professionals, with oversight for all press functions for more than 200 national and international print and electronic journalists, working closely with ABC Sports.

He has been the recipient of numerous honors, including the 1998 Silver Medal, Bulldog National Award for Excellence for "Response to Breaking News."  He is the source for two case studies in Crisis Communications in Healthcare, published in 2001 by the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development of the American Hospital Association.

Mr. Rutledge is a member of the Influencers Campaign, a statewide task force of the California Healthcare Association.  He has been a member of the Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing Association (HPRMA) since 1995, as well as an institutional representative to the Government & Public Relations Committee of the California Children's Hospital Association.

Mr. Rutledge earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from San Jose State University (1978), with a concentration in political science, and he received an MBA from National University (2000), with a concentration in health care administration.

Mr. Rutledge and his wife, Penny Key, reside in Culver City.
