Dr. Vernon T. Tolo Honored by California Children’s Services

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Surgeon has Pasadena Medical Therapy Unit renamed in his honor
LOS ANGELES – The Medical Therapy Program of California Children’s Services (CCS) dedicated the Vernon Tolo Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) at Roosevelt School in Pasadena. The dedication ceremonies were held on July 11, 2006.

Vernon T. Tolo, M.D., is head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and director of the Childrens Orthopaedic Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He is deputy chair of the Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital and the John C. Wilson, Jr., Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and vice chair for pediatric orthopedics of the Department of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Dr. Tolo is a past president of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and served on its board of directors between 1998 and 2005.

“Dr. Tolo has provided orthopedic services for the children of Pasadena since 1987,” according to a statement prepared by the CCS for the dedication ceremony. “He also has provided services for the medical therapy units in Glendale, San Luis Obispo and Mammoth Lakes.”

Dr. Tolo said that the “…dedicated and talented CCS therapists and staff make this medical therapy unit a wonderful resource for the Pasadena community,and it has been a real pleasure for me to work with them and the kids with special needs for nearly 20 years. It is a great honor to have this unit named after me.”

The author of chapters in 20 books, co-author of a book, and author or co-author of 112 scientific papers and abstracts, Dr. Tolo has made scientific presentations to more than 295 local, regional, national and international meetings.

He is a former associate editor for pediatrics of The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics

. He is deputy editor for pediatrics of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) and is on the JBJS board of trustees.

The past president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), Dr. Tolo served on its board of directors 1989-1997. He also is past president of the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Tolo has served on the national Medical Advisory Board for the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1995-2000, and continues as an emeritus member of the advisory board.

Dr. Tolo is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Scoliosis Research Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the California Orthopaedic Association.
