Michele Kipke Ph.D.

Research Interests:Dr. Kipke is widely published on topics that examine individual, familial, peer, and social network influences on youths’ involvement in risky behaviors (e.g., alcohol and other drug use, unintended pregnancies, HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases, violence). Additionally, she has conducted research on the causes and consequences of homelessness among youth in Los Angeles, and the factors that drive young people in Los Angeles to own and carry weapons. She is currently the Principal Investigator for several studies, including research focused on: (a) community-level risk factors associated with overweight and obesity during childhood; (b) HIV risk and prevention among high-risk youth groups, including an NIH-funded longitudinal study with a large and ethnically diverse cohort of young men and an RO1 study focused on African American youth; and (c) community translational research with ethnically diverse and high-risk communities wth the goal being to reduce disparities. In addition, she recently received a $5 million endowment that will support research focused on early diagnosis and intervention of autism and autism spectrum disorders.
