Child Life Practicum

The Child Life Department at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles offers a 10 week, 120-150 hour, Master’s level practicum experience for students from universities currently in contract with our institution.

Our practicum is conducted in accordance with the recommended standards set forth by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP), and is intended to prepare students for the Child Life Internship. Please click here for the ACLP’s Recommended Standards.

  • Enrollment in a graduate level program working toward a degree in child life at one of the following institutions (must have completed at least one year of program):
    • University of La Verne
    • Loma Linda University
  • Previous experience with ill children in a hospital or camp setting (Volunteer hours, practicum)
  • Previous experience with well children in a non-medical/health related setting
  • Actively pursuing a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist

All applications must include the following to be considered:

  • Completed CHLA Child Life Practicum Application
  • Two signed and sealed letters of recommendation, on official letterhead. One from the supervisor responsible for overseeing your experience with ill children, and one from a professional of your choice. Letters must have been written within the last year.
  • Transcripts, both undergraduate and graduate
  • Current resume/CV
  • Cover letter
  • One current color headshot, no larger than a ½ sheet of paper
  • All interviews will be conducted in person
  • Practicum students will be expected to commit to a scheduled 6 hours, twice a week, for the duration of the practicum experience
  • Practicum students will be expected to agree to and comply with the requirements and standards set forth by CHLA as well as the university currently enrolled in
  • Due to the large number of applications received, we are unable to provide individual feedback to applicants not chosen for interviews/practicum

Fall Term

Application deadline: April 15
Practicum begins (appoximately): Last week of August or 1st week of September

Spring Term

Application deadline: October 15
Practicum begins (appoximately): Last week of January or 1st week February

Summer Term

Application deadline: February 15
Practicum begins (appoximately): 1st week of June

  • All application materials must be present in order to be considered. Exception: Universities that will not send transcripts to the student may send directly to us, however it must arrive by the deadline
